About Bangkok

The Thai name of Bangkok is Krung Thep mahanakhon amon rattanakosin mahintara ayuthaya mahadilok phop noppharat ratchathani burirom udomratchaniwet mahasathan amon piman awatan sathit sakkathattiya witsanukam prasit.

Meaning: “The city of angels, the great city, the temple of the emerald Buddha, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city dedicated to Indra and built by Vishnukarn“.

This name was composed using the combination of two ancient Indian languages, Pali and Sanskrit.

Bangkok or Krung Thep (today the Thonburi District) was a village located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. After the destruction by the Burmese of the Capital City Ayutthaya in 1767, the General Taksin, turned King, decided to retreat to Thonburi and make a new capital there. He went mad, was assassinated and replaced by General Chakri who, under the name of Rama 1st, became the first king of the new Chakri Dynasty which still reigns today. In 1782 he decided to move the capital city to the left bank for security reasons and started the construction of fortified buildings, today the Grand Palace. April 21st, 1782 marks the date of the city’s foundation.

The name Bangkok was not used by the Thai People anymore after the foundation of this capital city. Some remote counties dwellers did not even hear about such a name. For unknown reasons this change was apparently never perceived by foreigners who continue, over 200 years later, to wrongly consider Bangkok as the official name.

Bangkok, the city of many names and many sins where nothing ever rests. De facto considered to be Southeast Asia’s front door, its charms and contradictions make it a surprising place to live in and visit; many areas remained quite atypical and are well worth the trip, but finding them is no easy task…
