Angkor Art (Khmer Art)
Marble carving in Cambodia is a tradition which dates back over a thousand years and won acclaim during the prosperous period of Angkor. Indeed, the Khmer Kingdom is blessed with abundant natural quarries, mainly located in the province of Pursat near the Tonle Sap. The precious stones originate from the Cardomom mountains. Pursat Province is the only region is found and therefore Pursat is very famous throughout the country for its marble product.
More than 30 percent of Pursat province’s residents carve their living out of the best quality marble (colored blue, green, red and black) in Cambodia, according authorities of marble carving department in the museum of Pursat province. Since marble is abundant and more easily extracted in Pursat than in other areas of Cambodia, marble carving is a popular business for residents. This art originated during the French colonization of Cambodia, when marble was first discovered in Krovanh district. As statues must be aesthetically pleasing and of high quality to attract buyers, a carving school has been founded to support over 300 students who improve the best carving techniques.
The high quality stone is then transported toward Phnom Penh to be carved by local sculptors who perpetuate the style and the know-how of the Angkorian period. Phnom Penh craftsmen have developed from the ambitious belief that it is possible to revive ancient Khmer Arts & Crafts while improving the lives of thousands of people living in rural areas. By developing high quality products that express the dynamism of the Khmer culture, Phnom Penh craftsmen strive to be a timeless showcase for Cambodian crafts with pieces inspired by Angkor heritage as well as fashionable handmade clothing and decorative items that can suit contemporary lifestyles.
