Thai Teacher in Fine Art @ Silpakorn University Bangkok, Thailand
Born in 1977, Amnat Kongwaree is a successful Thai Artist who currently heads the Lithography Section as Art Instructor of the Graphic Art Department in the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. Amnat is specialized in Lithography (printmaking) but can provide acrylic and oil on canvas as well.
His work aims to depict the dark side of human nature through the prism of loneliness, sadness and desolation. Amnat’s work is mainly about Thai girls who are waiting for to deal with customers for short time sex. But some girls think (hope) to meet the right guy at the wrong place, some think there is no more hope, some don’t even think at all. There is not much optimism in Amnat’s interior quest to depict the collateral damage of Thailand nightlife, go-go bars and massage parlours. His disturbing work is remarkably realistic in the way it shows how tough is life in front and behind the waiting girls scene. Without any judgement, Amnat’s technique recreates perfectly the artificial colors of neon tubes, which is the universal signal that girls are waiting inside. From what we know so far, the work of Amnat is unique in Thai Art Scene because it depicts something that many Thai people are ashamed of and have no interest to talk about again and again. There is one political message behind Amnat’s work: that Thai people deserve (better) education, for all.

Amnat by himself
Fifteen years on the road of art that had been carefully conserved, socialized, created until becoming the lifestyle passed by to now can cause attitude an view that arts is like a vehicle to take us free with imagination and lead us to genuine existence deeply.
I, not seem to be one who concentrate or be attracted to those above but it seems like I view generally public awareness of dominated aesthetics but overlooking it. The work of “Waiting” I realize that creation of artwork depending on the study of other in a time resulting to acknowledge attitude and existence. It is considered being good experience.
Many people think and ask if not any inspiration, then those are motivation. I, myself, keep repeating to my mind that: “Seeing no goodness of negative side because we always think there is only positive side in this world”, as the mater of fact, it is not, but it is because when light shine one side. The other side will be shaded. And what permanent goodness and badness. Who made that decision when individual correctness is different. The matter of truth and intangible matter are collected and framed in different levels of lives (human) in society, therefore, it is independent society.
“The Women” in my graphic work are people whom I think their careers are interesting lead to search for something. It may be happy or sad alternately like any others, such as, politician, government employee, artist, company staff that those work for payment, money.
I observed the time-gap and distance … “waiting”, the expectation can be touched today, tomorrow while the difficult of touch can be an expecting in a time of hope … that may be something happens – changes and another time that may cause something better or worse but it is difficult to touch, to know with only physically feeling.
The unusual appears physically may touch with the first sight but the their unusual mind must touch with mind only. Such significance may reflect question and answer the same time through “her” or “them” who reflect the truth of deformed society now and then.
“Desolate – Waiting – Sideline & Waiting Again” Series
in 2001, Amnat Kongwaree began working on his Desolate Series. He strolled down the long road lined with clubs, bars and karaoke restaurants, frequented by people of the night, that leads to a huge department store. Girls are waiting as men are chasing. This is the way it is. Thick make-up on face, pink lights, red lights, decorative tiny twinkling lights, add life to the seated living mannequins and attracting fair attention. In Sideline series, Amnat Kongwaree places emphasis on the tight-fitting blouse, buttons ready to burst, and short shirt that contradict the expressionless face and the usual blank “eyes”. We can sense the cynicism permeating the air of the nameless venue as if “time has been brought to a standstill” for the artist to present his work with quiet discretion, which is different from being nonchalant or indifferent. For Waiting Series, the concept remains the same but the girls are waiting in bars and massages parlours.
Educational Art Thailand
Rock Around Asia is leading a educational art program in partnership with the Lithography Section (headed by Amnat Kongwaree) of Faculty of Fine Art of Silpakorn University in Bangkok. This educational art program aims to coach students in Fine Art in order to facilitate their access to the Art Market. Supporting students in Fine Art previously requires a significant work from us to gather, collect, sort, interview, conceptualize, formalize and issue final marketing materials (biography in English, photos of artworks, student portraits, collages, pricing, web integration, social medias promotion, etc.).
